A ground collapse at Zimbabwe’s Redwing Mine, trapped 11 subsistence mine workers in an underground shaft on Thursday morning.
The mine is located 270 kilometres west of Harare, the capital city.
The mines ministry of Zimbabwe issued a statement saying that earth tremors might have caused the accident. It also said that Metallon Corporation, the owner of Redwing Mine, had confirmed the incident.
Metallon said in a separate statement that it had sent a rescue team to save the trapped miners. “The team has made several rescue attempts. However, the ground remains unstable, rendering rescue operations unsafe. Our teams are diligently assessing ground conditions to make sure the rescue operations proceed safely as soon as possible,’’ the company said.
The company also said that since 2020, when the mine was placed under corporate rescue, subsistence miners had been conducting unsanctioned mining operations at Redwing.
