The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has slammed Bola Tinubu, accusing his administration of worsening the hardships faced by Nigerians in 2024 through poor policy decisions and broken promises.
CUPP’s National Secretary, Peter Ameh, labeled the President’s New Year’s Day address as “empty rhetoric,” claiming it showed little understanding of the struggles endured by millions of citizens.
“2024 was an extremely difficult year for most Nigerians due to the rash and poorly considered decisions made by this government,” Ameh said.
He questioned Tinubu’s assertion of fighting corruption, pointing to Nigeria’s low ranking of 143rd out of 149 countries on the corruption perception index as evidence of failure.
Ameh also criticized the administration’s subsidy removal policy, noting that transportation costs skyrocketed by 300%, deepening the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.
He took particular issue with Tinubu’s anecdote about a friend who shifted from a Rolls Royce to a Honda, calling it insensitive and out of touch with the reality of those who have lost even their most basic means of survival.
“With one pronouncement, the cost of living skyrocketed. Today, 129 million Nigerians—56% of the population—live below the poverty line,” he lamented.
The opposition leader also dismissed the President’s plans to float a new company to tackle inflation, calling it a needless duplication of existing agencies that would only increase bureaucratic inefficiencies.
“Food inflation stands at 80%, and instead of actionable steps, we get more talk. These policies are pushing more Nigerians into excruciating poverty,” Ameh said.
He also condemned Tinubu’s handling of the nation’s debt, highlighting how the cost of debt servicing had soared from ₦87 trillion to over ₦130 trillion within a single year.
The CUPP called on the administration to focus on implementing practical solutions instead of engaging in grandstanding, emphasizing the pressing need for policies that tackle the worsening economic and social crises afflicting the country.
