As preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify, anxiety is mounting in Bola Tinubu’s camp over potential defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly by members of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc, now considering a shift to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
According to a leaked memo, Tinubu is reportedly making desperate efforts to retain CPC loyalists within the APC.
One of such moves includes the consideration of former Nasarawa State Governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura a staunch ally of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari for the position of APC National Chairman.

The offer is seen as a strategic attempt to persuade Buhari to step in and rally his base against defection.
Sources told Vanguard that Al-Makura has scheduled a press conference for Monday, where he is expected to announce Buhari’s alleged support for keeping his political family within the APC fold.

This is seen as part of a larger strategy to stem the wave of dissatisfaction brewing within the ruling party.
The developments come amid fears of a broader political realignment ahead of 2027, with prominent politicians such as Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Aminu Tambuwal, and Achike Udenwa reportedly in talks with alternative platforms.
El-Rufai, in particular, has publicly claimed to have received Buhari’s blessing to exit the APC, while in Buhari’s home state of Katsina, mass defections are already underway.
Meanwhile, APC governors, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, recently visited Buhari in Kaduna to seek his intervention and avert a looming political crisis.
