2027: PDP Must Engage, Talk to Peter Obi – Party Chieftain, Olafeso

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) reconciliation committee, Eddy Olafeso, has urged the party to engage with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other opposition leaders to form an alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Olafeso believes such an alliance is the only viable path to defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

Obi, who was initially in the PDP during the 2023 election cycle, left the party to join the Labour Party, under which he contested the presidential election.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), he secured 6,101,533 votes, finishing in third place.

Many of his supporters still contend that he won the election but was unfairly deprived of victory, though no official confirmation supports this claim.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Wednesday, Olafeso was asked whether the crisis-ridden PDP needs to reconcile with Obi to stand a chance against the APC in 2027.

According to him, “Not only Peter Obi, every person that is somebody in this country that can actually garner one or two votes must be spoken with.”

The PDP chieftain said it would be difficult for any single political party to defeat the APC without a strong alliance.

“It is not only here that you have alliances; you have people working together to be able to win an election.

“It happened in Ghana not quite a long time ago and that is exactly what we all should do at this moment, no single party can defeat the APC alone, don’t let us delude ourselves. We must all come together to fight,” Olafeso added.

He attributed the party’s fragmentation before the 2023 election to the PDP leadership, which he believed played a role in its defeat at the polls.

Olafeso expressed regret over the party’s failure to maintain unity, emphasizing that a combined Atiku and Obi vote would have relegated Tinubu to a distant second.
