Democracy Day: How 25 Persons Died in Multiple Crashes at Nigerian Army Checkpoint in Enugu

A tragic multiple-car crash in Enugu State has reportedly resulted in the loss of 25 lives, marking a deeply saddening turn of events on Wednesday.

The car crash unfolded at Ugwu Onyeama along the Enugu-Onitsha federal highway and involved a total of 10 vehicles, encompassing both private and commercial buses.

Allegedly caused by a Nigerian Army checkpoint, the accident has left numerous individuals severely injured, prompting emergency services to swiftly transport them to hospitals in and around the state capital.

According to SaharaReporters, eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, detailing how a truck, unable to brake, careened out of control down the hilly road, ultimately colliding with multiple vehicles halted at the checkpoint.

“A trailer plying the newly constructed lane failed to brake and smashed into more than 10 cars, both private and commercial buses.

“The army checkpoint at that axis continues to claim lives. More than 25 persons lost their lives instantly, and many were rushed to the hospital,” said an eyewitness.

Disturbing footage from the scene shared with SaharaReporters depicts the aftermath of the accident, with bodies strewn across the road and vehicles, including a petrol tanker truck, submerged in a nearby ditch.
