How 411 Nigerians Died Scooping Fuel in 2024—FRSC

Between January and December 2024, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrested 21,580 traffic offenders across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This marks a reduction compared to the 29,220 offenders arrested during the same period in 2023, reflecting a 26% increase in compliance with traffic rules and regulations.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this during a press briefing on the 2024 special patrol operations held on Monday in Abuja.

He revealed that the total number of traffic offences recorded in 2024 was 25,942, representing a 23.5% reduction in violations compared to the previous year.

Analyzing the Corps’ annual performance, Mohammed noted a marked decline in Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) nationwide.

From January 1 to December 31, 2024, a total of 9,570 RTCs were reported, down from 10,617 in 2023—a 10% reduction. Injuries caused by crashes also decreased slightly, with 31,154 people injured in 2024 compared to 31,874 in 2023, reflecting a 2% decrease.

However, the number of fatalities increased by 7%, with 5,421 deaths recorded in 2024 compared to 5,081 in 2023. Mohammed attributed 411 of these fatalities—accounting for 7.6% of total deaths—not to crashes directly but to fuel scooping incidents following tanker accidents.

He described this behavior as a persistent and dangerous trend the Corps is striving to combat.

Without the casualties caused by fuel scooping, the total fatalities in 2024 would have been 5,010, underscoring the significant impact of this secondary factor on road safety statistics.
