In a significant political shift, approximately 8,000 supporters from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) joined the Labour Party in Kaduna State on Saturday.
The mass defection was led by Tinok Andrew Nok, a senatorial aspirant in the 2023 general elections and sister to former Kaduna State Commissioner of Education, Prof. Andrew Nok.
Tinok expressed her belief that the Labour Party aligns with her values of honesty and service to the community. She credited her decision to join the Labour Party to the influence of Senator Nnadi Usman, the party’s National Caretaker Committee Chairman.
She stated, “My decision to join the Labour Party is influenced by Senator Nnadi Usman, National Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party,” and promised to leverage her wealth of experience to strengthen the party and contribute to its growth in Kaduna State.
The Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Jonathan Asake, who represented Senator Usman during the event, welcomed Tinok and emphasised the party’s commitment to utilizing her expertise for its transition into a more viable political force in the state and nationally. He urged her to help reposition the Labour Party in Kaduna.
The event also featured the presentation of Labour Party flags in preparation for the upcoming local government elections on October 19.
Tinok’s defection is viewed as a considerable boost to the Labour Party in Kaduna, with analysts suggesting it could alter the political landscape as the elections approach.
The overwhelming crowd at the event underscored the enthusiasm and optimism surrounding Tinok’s move, reflecting a potential shift in the balance of power within Kaduna State. As the local government elections draw near, all eyes are on the Labour Party’s performance and its capacity to capitalize on this newfound momentum.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Yusuf Solomon Danbaki, the State Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Labour Party, assured candidates of his unwavering support and commitment to their success in the forthcoming elections.
