The Nigerian Army has remained silent following allegations of torture and inhumane treatment in custody that led to the death of James Oghoroko, the President-General of the Okuama Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.
Oghoroko was arrested between August 18 and 20, along with Arthur Ekpekpo, Belvis Adogbo, Dennis Okugbaye, Anthony Ahwemuria, and Rita Akata.
Since their arrest, they have remained in detention. Their detention is believed to be linked to the killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama in March.
Reports from multiple media outlets, on Thursday indicated that Oghoroko passed away after spending three months in military detention.
During an emergency community meeting, other Okuama leaders disclosed that Oghoroko’s death resulted from prolonged torture and inhumane treatment while in custody.
When contacted by FIJ for comments, the army neither confirmed nor denied Oghoroko’s death. Attempts to reach Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian Army spokesperson, have so far been unsuccessful, as he has not responded to calls or messages since Thursday.
