Nigerian journalist and broadcaster, Oseni Rufai, has commended human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi, describing him as “a beacon of light” with unwavering courage.
Rufai’s tribute comes amid Farotimi’s arrest and the subsequent surge in popularity of his literary works.
On December 3, 2024, Dele Farotimi was arrested in Lagos by officers from the Nigerian Police Force’s Zone 2 Command.
The arrest followed a defamation petition filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola, who alleged that Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, contained defamatory statements.
Farotimi was subsequently transferred to Ekiti State, where he was arraigned before a magistrate court on December 5, facing 16 counts of defamation and cyberstalking.
The court ordered his remand in prison custody pending further proceedings.
