Funniest Bail Condition Is Prohibition on Media Interviews for Dele Farotimi – Nigerians React

A netizen has described one of the bail conditions imposed on human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi as “the funniest,” referring to the restriction prohibiting him from granting media interviews if released.

The comment was made under a post by journalist Oseni Rufai, who also questioned the condition.

Rufai highlighted the issue in his post, stating, “A man is locked up for weeks, and now they say he shouldn’t talk.”

Reacting to the post, a netizen tweeted, “The funniest bail condition giving for the release of Dele Farotimi among others is “His prohibition on granting media interviews” if released. Why they don’t want him to grant an interview?” @Aginas questioned.

The bail conditions, issued by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court on December 20, 2024, have since sparked widespread debate online.

Dele Farotimi, facing defamation charges, was granted bail by an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court on December 20, 2024. His bail conditions include a N30 million bond, two sureties (one of whom must own property), surrendering his passport, and refraining from granting media interviews during the trial.

Many Nigerians argue that the media restriction infringes upon Farotimi’s freedom of expression, with some viewing it as an attempt to silence his outspoken advocacy.

However, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has offered to fulfill the bail requirements, describing the situation as concerning and calling for fairness in the legal process.
