Government Should Focus on Crowd Control, Not Ban Palliative Sharing – Oseni Rufai

Renowned journalist, Oseni Rufai, has criticized the recent ban on palliative distribution announced by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The ban came after stampedes during palliative distribution exercises in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja, leading to several deaths.

Reacting to the ban, Rufai, in a post on his X handle, reminded the Tinubu administration of a similar tragedy in February 2024 during a government-organized palliative distribution. That event resulted in a stampede that claimed the lives of seven individuals.

Rufai emphasized that the government should prioritize implementing proper crowd control measures instead of outrightly banning palliative distribution. He argued that such bans hinder Nigerians from supporting one another in times of need.

Backing his claims, Rufai shared a screenshot of a news report about the February 2024 incident.

He wrote, “Imagine the same government that people died during their own palliative sharing exercise telling Nigerians not to help other Nigerians. Abi dem think say we forget? Evidence dey. All they need to tell people to do is work on crowd control.”
