BREAKING: Justin Trudeau Has Officially Resigned as Prime Minister of Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation.

The 53-year-old said he will step down as leader of the country’s ruling Liberal Party, which he has led since 2013.

He has announced his decision to step down as prime minister, citing the need for his party to choose a new leader. This decision comes alongside his suspension of parliament until March, aiming to address ongoing political deadlock.

Justin Trudeau, who has served as prime minister since 2015, faced mounting calls to resign from his own MPs, fueled by declining approval ratings in opinion polls.

Pressure intensified after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in December, following policy disputes, including how to respond to potential U.S. tariffs under Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

Trudeau’s resignation coincides with polls indicating that his party, the Liberals, faces a significant risk of a crushing defeat to the opposition Conservatives in an election required by late October.

The Liberals must now appoint an interim leader to serve as prime minister until a special leadership convention is held.

Trudeau initially rose to power in 2015 after a decade of Conservative rule, earning praise for steering Canada back to a more liberal trajectory. However, in recent years, his popularity has waned due to issues such as skyrocketing costs of food and housing and increasing immigration levels.

He is the eldest son of Pierre Trudeau, one of Canada’s most iconic prime ministers.
