The China Development Bank (CDB) has approved a $254.76 million loan to support the construction of the Kano-Kaduna railway project in Nigeria under Bola Tinubu’s government.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the bank noted that the funding would ensure the smooth implementation of the infrastructure project.
The construction is being managed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) with financial backing from the CDB.
“The Kano-Kaduna railway spans a total of 203 kilometers and is designed as a standard-gauge railway,” the statement read.
“Upon completion, it will establish a direct rail link between Kano, a key city in northern Nigeria, and the capital, Abuja, offering residents a safe, efficient, and convenient transportation option.”
The bank emphasized that the project would not only improve mobility but also stimulate economic development along the railway corridor, create job opportunities, and boost related industries.
The CDB further stated that the Kano-Kaduna railway project is part of the practical cooperation initiatives under the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
Construction is progressing smoothly, with the bank reaffirming its commitment to working closely with the Nigerian government to ensure proper fund disbursement and effective management of subsequent phases.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari officially launched the construction of the Kano-Kaduna railway project on July 15, 2021.
The rail line is the third segment of the Lagos-Kano standard-gauge railway modernization project. The first two segments, Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan, were inaugurated for commercial operations in July 2016 and June 2021, respectively.
