Officials from Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu states, in collaboration with the Carter Center’s Enugu office, gathered on Thursday to honor the late former United States President, Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.
The event included a short video showcasing President Carter’s visit to Nigeria and his global public health efforts, highlighting his dedication to improving lives worldwide.
Dr. Lazarus Nweke, Assistant Director of the Carter Center, emphasized the respect and admiration held for President Jimmy Carter, who, alongside his late wife Rosalyn Carter, founded the Carter Center in 1982.
Dr. Nweke detailed the Carter Center Nigeria’s health programs across nine states, including Plateau, Nasarawa, Edo, Delta, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi, focusing on eliminating diseases such as river blindness, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis. A condolence register was opened on January 2 across these states to honor President Carter’s legacy.
He shared that the Enugu office has been visited by numerous sympathizers from government and community groups since the announcement of President Carter’s passing. President Carter’s work, including eradicating Guinea worm disease in Nigeria in 2013, was highlighted. The Carter Center signed a memorandum with Nigeria in 1988 to tackle Guinea worm disease and later expanded to other neglected tropical diseases. The Center continues to make strides in eliminating river blindness and lymphatic filariasis in affected states.
The Candlelight Night of Service was organized across the Center’s offices in Enugu, Owerri, Benin, and Jos to coincide with President Carter’s funeral ceremony in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 2025.
The program included tributes from Dr. Afam Anaeme, Director of Public Health, Anambra State, and others. Dr. Anaeme commended the Carter Center’s contributions to scientific research and disease prevention, while Enugu State’s Health Commissioner, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, described Carter as an “icon of peace and embodiment of humility.”
Attendees were reminded of the importance of continuing Carter’s legacy of love and compassion for humanity. #Jimmy Carter
