Ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, President Joe Biden has renewed temporary deportation relief for 900,000 immigrants from Venezuela, El Salvador, Ukraine, and Sudan.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security confirmed on Friday that protection under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program has been extended for an additional 18 months, allowing work permits for the affected individuals.
TPS provides relief to people from countries facing disasters, conflicts, or other extraordinary circumstances.
Since taking office in 2021, the Biden administration has expanded the TPS program, offering protection to over one million people from 17 nations.
This extension is seen as a move to delay any actions by the incoming Trump administration, which attempted to end TPS during its first term.
Trump’s focus on large-scale deportations was central to his campaign, and he has already made appointments to push forward his immigration plans. These include Tom Homan as “border czar,” and Rodney S. Scott and Caleb Vitello.

Mr Scott, a veteran border official who served as the Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol during Trump’s first term, has been appointed to lead Customs and Border Protection. Mr Vitello, a longtime official with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been named as the agency’s acting head.
