Militants affiliated with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a faction of Boko Haram, have carried out a deadly assault on two communities in Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attacks, which occurred in Tsikarkur and Zillang villages, left numerous people dead, houses burned, and a church destroyed.
According to local sources, the insurgents first attacked Tsikarkur village around 2 p.m. on Sunday, shooting indiscriminately and setting properties ablaze. Among the casualties were two siblings. They also looted food supplies and livestock before moving on to Zillang village on Monday night.
A resident reported, “Last night, around 11:30 p.m., I started hearing heavy gunshots. The sounds came from Zillang village. The villagers alerted the Nigerian Army, who, with vigilante support, engaged the terrorists. The gun battle lasted from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. Many houses and properties were destroyed, but casualty figures remain unclear.”

This recent violence comes shortly after the Borno State Government confirmed the deaths of 40 farmers in a terrorist attack on Dumba community in Kukawa Local Government Area. Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the killings and stated, “Investigation has commenced on the circumstances behind this attack. Initial reports indicate about 40 farmers have been killed while many who escaped are being traced for reunion with their families.”
Chibok gained international attention in April 2014 after the abduction of over 300 students from the Government Girls Secondary School, an incident that highlighted Boko Haram’s reign of terror.
These latest attacks underline the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP, as well as the challenges faced by local authorities and security forces in protecting vulnerable communities in the region.
