67th Grammys: Tems Outshines Davido, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Asake to Win Best African Music Performance

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, surpassed fellow artists Davido, Yemi Alade, Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Asake to win the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Tems’ hit song ‘Love Me Jeje’ emerged victorious over “Tomorrow” (Yemi Alade); “MMS” (Asake & Wizkid); “Sensational” (Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay); and “Higher” (Burna Boy).

“Love Me Jeje”, a sample of Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 song of the same title, has received critical acclaim from global music buffs following its release last April.

Tems’ win marks back-to-back victories for women in the newly introduced category.

Last year, South African singer Tyla claimed the inaugural award with her global hit “Water.”

However, Tems fell short in her two other nominations, losing Best R&B Song to SZA’s “Saturn” and Best Global Music Album to Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Alkebulan II.
