Kachallah Bammi Yarma, a notorious bandits kingpin who was imprisoned in Niger Republic, has resurfaced in Katsina State, northwest Nigeria, nearly nine years after his conviction.
Counter-insurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed Bammi Yarma’s reappearance in a post on X on Tuesday.
Bammi Yarma was captured in 2015 under the administration of former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari. At the time, his arrest was considered a major success in the fight against banditry, as authorities had intercepted him smuggling arms with nine camels in Danmusa, Katsina.
The operation also resulted in the seizure of 1,000 livestock, dealing a significant blow to the bandits’ supply chain.
Having served his sentence in Niger, Bammi Yarma is now believed to have returned to his former stronghold, where he once orchestrated violent attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling.
His resurgence has fueled fears due to his stronghold over bandit factions operating in Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto states.
Intelligence sources report that top bandit leaders are paying tribute to him and presenting him with firearms, further cementing his power and influence in the region. With a history of eliminating rival bandit leaders such as Kachallah Kundu, Bammi Yarma’s return is expected to escalate violence in the already unstable region.
Beyond Nigeria, his reputation extends across the Sahel, with reports suggesting that even other terrorist factions fear his reach. His re-emergence is anticipated to spark conflicts among rival bandit groups and could lead to an increase in attacks on vulnerable rural communities.
