Former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, has expressed deep concern over the worsening poverty rate in Nigeria, citing a personal experience as an example of the economic hardship faced by many citizens.
Speaking on the state of the economy, Mr. Shittu recounted how a woman repeatedly called him seeking financial assistance of just N3,000 but, at that moment, he was unable to help.
In a recent interview with AIT, monitored by Parallel Facts, he said, “Yesterday, somebody phoned me from Bauchi and begged me for 1,000 naira, saying he had not eaten for two days.”
“Again, about a week ago, someone called me and wanted N3,000, and at the time she needed that money—unbelievably—I myself didn’t have it to give her. She called me 30 times,” he revealed.
“When you go to such people to ask for votes, they don’t care what you are capable of doing but are only interested in what they can get from you today. That’s the weaponization of poverty,” he added.
Nigeria has been grappling with high inflation, unemployment, and a weak currency, making it increasingly difficult for many citizens to afford basic necessities.
