On Wednesday, the Senate approved Bola Tinubu’s request to dismiss the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of Abia, Adamawa, and Sokoto States.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion moved by Senate Majority Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
The affected RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto), who were suspended over allegations of gross misconduct.

Tinubu had earlier sought the Senate’s approval to terminate their appointments, citing constitutional provisions.
While presenting the motion, Bamidele emphasized that the request aligns with Section 157(1) of the Constitution.
In support of the motion, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro stated that the dismissal would serve as a warning to public officeholders.
“This administration has promised Nigerians that it will fight corruption. For this reason, the termination will serve as a deterrent to those in public service,” he said.

Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno stated that with 91 senators present at Wednesday’s session in the red chamber, the Senate had the required two-thirds majority to approve the president’s request.
“The philosophical cornerstone of this motion is to reinforce Section 157(1) of the constitution. We have been called upon to discharge our duties to protect the integrity of public offices,” he said.
The motion was adopted after it was put to a voice vote by Senate President Godswill Akpabio who presided over the plenary session.
