Telecom Companies Warn of Shutdown Amid Fuel Tanker Drivers’ Strike

Telecommunications companies in Nigeria have threatened to shut down operations due to the ongoing fuel tanker drivers’ strike, which has led to a diesel supply crisis affecting network infrastructure.

In a statement on Sunday, Tony Emoekpere, President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), said the strike was severely impacting telecom operations.

Emoekpere stated, “The persistent harassment of tanker and petroleum product drivers by police officers in Lagos State has effectively halted all truck loading operations and fuel movements.”

He warned that the disruption had left telecom base stations and critical sites with dangerously low fuel levels, forcing companies to consider shutting down services. This could affect millions of users, disrupt business activities, and compromise emergency response systems.

He added, “This is not just a telecom issue; it is a national emergency that could cripple economic activities and compromise public safety.”

Emoekpere urged Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene. He also called on security agencies and petroleum unions to resolve the crisis before it escalates further.
