In response to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) directive, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is set to initiate a nationwide strike starting midnight, Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
The decision, made during a joint Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress meeting in Abuja, stems from concerns over workers’ rights violations, non-payment of salaries, pensions, and the government’s failure to implement agreements.
Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, confirmed the strike following incidents such as the abduction and assault on Nigeria Labour Congress President Comrade Joe Ajaero and other union officials.
The NLC and TUC cite ongoing disregard for national minimum wage standards and the government’s non-compliance with agreed-upon terms as catalysts for the nationwide protest.
