Many Injured Army Personnel Since 2021 Take Care of Themselves with Their Own Money – Nigerian Soldier Slams CDS Musa Over Corruption, Poor Welfare

A Nigerian soldier has fiercely criticized the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, after the recent denial of his Canadian visa.

In a video that surfaced on Monday, the soldier, who chose to remain anonymous, accused top military officials, including the CDS, of deeply rooted corruption and neglecting soldiers, particularly those who are injured.

In the video, lasting eight minutes and 14 seconds, the soldier expressed frustration over what he described as a deliberate sabotage of the Nigerian military’s efforts to combat terrorism.

He alleged that senior military figures were enriching themselves through corrupt practices while soldiers, particularly those wounded in action, were left to care for themselves. He mentioned that many injured soldiers were paying for their own medical treatment despite being injured while serving the country.

He also blamed the Nigerian government for not providing sufficient support for soldiers wounded during military operations, specifically pointing to the conditions at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Kaduna and the 7 Division.

He emphasized that these soldiers, who had suffered injuries while defending the country, were not being properly compensated or treated by the government.

The soldier further claimed that the government’s failure to support wounded soldiers was indicative of a broader lack of planning and concern for the welfare of the rank-and-file military personnel.

He stressed that this was a major issue for lower-ranking soldiers, who often face retirement without any significant support.

In his emotionally charged message, the soldier said, “We have died too much. You people should make this country sweet for us.”

He criticized fellow soldiers who criticized him for speaking out, warning that the neglect of injured soldiers could happen to anyone.

His message concluded with a defiant statement, saying he was not afraid of facing consequences for speaking out, even if it meant being silenced like other soldiers who had previously spoken up against military corruption.

This video follows the earlier case of Seaman Abbas Haruna, a naval rating who was dismissed in 2024 for allegedly disobeying orders. His wife had accused the military authorities of unlawfully detaining him for years.

The soldier’s video is seen as another voice calling attention to the suffering of soldiers and the military’s failure to address their needs, amidst ongoing concerns about corruption and mismanagement in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
