Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North and a former governor of Abia State, has urged Chief Bola Tinubu to officially recognize the late Chief MKO Abiola as one of Nigeria’s past presidents.
Speaking to journalists before Tuesday’s Senate plenary, Kalu emphasised that Abiola’s portrait should be displayed alongside those of other former leaders in the Presidential Villa.
His call comes after former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.), confirmed in his newly released memoir that Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Kalu stated, “Yes, Abiola won the election. And I will say Tinubu should declare him a president posthumously.”
While acknowledging former President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to honour Abiola with a national award, Kalu argued that further recognition is necessary.j
He added, “Since Abiola won, his picture should be placed among Nigeria’s past presidents. I commend former President Buhari for giving him a national honour, but I also appeal to Tinubu to officially recognize him and place his image where it belongs. This would bring succour to his family.”
Kalu also called on Babangida to release a follow-up to his memoir, revealing more details about the annulment of the June 12 election.
“I was present during the events of June 12, and I know what happened. Babangida should call out those responsible for preventing the election declaration.”

He also urged Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu’s administration, arguing that even presidents initially perceived as underperforming have historically secured second terms.
“The good news is that we will secure another victory in 2027. The president will return, and Nigerians will celebrate with us. That is certain,” Kalu stressed.
