In a move to bolster the judiciary’s role in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has pledged that the FCT administration (Tinubu) will create an environment conducive to the fair and impartial dispensation of justice. This commitment was made at the inaugural ceremony of the 2023 All Nigeria Judges’ Conference of the Superior Courts of Record, held in Abuja.
The conference was themed “Strengthening Judicial Commitments to the Rule of Law and Democracy.”
Minister Wike disclosed that Tinubu had mandated the establishment of a new division of the Court of Appeal for the FCT, with a projected completion timeline of 15 months. Furthermore, the construction of residences for High and Magistrate Court judges in the FCT is set to commence.
In a bid to enhance the welfare of judicial officers in the capital city, Tinubu has also directed an increase in their welfare package. Minister Wike affirmed, “In the FCTA, we are unwavering in our commitment to fostering an environment that empowers the judiciary to dispense justice without fear or favor.”

The Minister lauded the National Judicial Institute (NJI) for its pivotal role in providing a platform for judges nationwide to exchange ideas, engage in substantive legal discussions, and stay abreast of evolving legal issues.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) and Chairman, Board of Governors of the NJI, Olukayode Ariwoola, underscored the strategic importance of the conference. He urged judges to consistently strive for excellence in their duties, emphasizing that “justice should not only be done but must be seen to be done”.
Tinubu, represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, acknowledged the evolution of the Nigerian judiciary. He urged judicial officers to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism at all times.
