Insecurity: Zamfara Student Dies in Captivity Despite ₦10 Million Ransom Payment

Tragedy has struck in Zamfara State as 21-year-old Zarah Abubakar Shehu, a student of the Federal University Gusau, died in captivity four months after being abducted alongside her two siblings.

Zarah, a 300-level student, was kidnapped from her home in the Damba area of Gusau in the early hours of Sunday, November 3, 2024, by armed bandits.

The abductors initially demanded ₦35 million for their release but later reduced the ransom to ₦10 million after negotiations.

Despite receiving the ransom, the kidnappers refused to release Zarah, demanding four motorcycles (Boza) and four cartons of engine oil before setting the siblings free.

After months of struggling to meet these additional demands, the items were finally secured. However, when the kidnappers’ leader was contacted, he reached out to his men, who disclosed that Zarah had died and had been buried two days earlier.

The deceased, the only daughter of her mother, spent four harrowing months in captivity before her tragic death.
