The Lagos Buban Health Post in Taraba State’s Donga Local Government Area has become a stark representation of Nigeria’s deteriorating primary healthcare system, leaving three communities without access to proper medical care.
With crumbling infrastructure, a severe shortage of medical personnel, and a lack of essential equipment, the facility highlights the healthcare crisis facing rural Nigeria.
According to a report by Orodata Science, the health post—despite handling over 180 patient visits annually—operates without a single doctor or nurse.
The only available healthcare worker, a Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW), struggles to provide care under dire conditions. The walls are collapsing, hospital beds are broken, and the pharmacy lacks even the most basic medications.
Immunization services are the only functional aspect of the facility. Beyond that, patients have little choice but to seek treatment elsewhere, often traveling long distances on foot or by bicycle to access proper medical care.
An investigation by CheckMyPHC, a civic-tech tool developed by Orodata Science, revealed that the Lagos Buban Health Post is not an isolated case.

Across Nigeria, many primary healthcare centers (PHCs) suffer from similar neglect—lacking electricity, clean water, and sanitary conditions. This forces patients into life-threatening situations where preventable complications become fatal.
The dire state of the Lagos Buban Health Post underscores the urgent need for government intervention. Community members are calling on Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State and Donga Local Government Chairman, Hon. Ezra Voka, to take immediate action.
Their demands are clear: rehabilitate the facility, equip it with essential medical supplies, and deploy trained healthcare professionals.
“Walking into the PHC, you’re greeted by decay—a collapsed ceiling, leaking roofs, and rusted doors barely hanging on their hinges. The only available healthcare personnel is a Junior Community Health Extension Worker (JCHEW), managing patient care alone. Immunisation services are rated good, but beyond that, treatment quality is poor, leaving patients with no choice but to seek care elsewhere,” the report said.
“This is not just a failing system—it’s a health crisis in slow motion. The government, NGOs, and stakeholders must step up. This PHC needs immediate intervention: a proper structure, medical personnel, and access to basic utilities.”
It said, “Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State, Chairman Hon. Ezra Voka, this is beyond policy; this is about people’s lives. Lagos Buban Health Post is crumbling, and with it, the health of an entire community. This is your moment to lead with action and empathy. Rebuild this facility. Equip it. Staff it. Give these people a fighting chance.”
