Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has slammed the Lagos-Calabar Highway project initiated by Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Obasanjo condemned the project, which is expected to cost N15.6 trillion upon completion, calling it wasteful and corrupt.
He also labeled the N21 billion allocated for constructing the Vice President’s official residence as an unnecessary expense.
He stated, “Everything is said to be transactional, and the slogan is ‘It is my turn to chop.’
“Typical examples of waste, corruption, and misplaced priorities are the murky Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, on which the President had turned a deaf ear to protests, and the new Vice-President’s official residence built at a cost of N21bn in the time of economic hardship to showcase the administration hitting the ground running and to show the importance of the office of the Vice-President. What small minds!”
Meanwhile, Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson for Tinubu, has yet to respond to the latest criticism from former President Olusegun Obasanjo against his principal.
The Lagos-Calabar Highway and the construction of a new residence for the Vice President have sparked widespread controversy among Nigerians.

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, also voiced concerns about the project, calling for its suspension.
Despite the criticism, Tinubu’s administration has defended the projects.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has repeatedly justified the initiative, recently announcing that 30 kilometers of the first 70-kilometer section of the Lagos-Calabar Highway will be completed by May 2025.
The Lagos-Calabar Highway project commenced in March last year.
