Rivers Crisis: Consider Suffering Masses, Real Losers are Nigerians — Obi Tells State Actors

Peter Obi, the Labour Party 2023 presidential candidate, has called on political leaders involved in the Rivers State crisis to prioritise the welfare of the people, warning that Nigerians are the real losers in the ongoing power struggle.

In a statement signed by POMR spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, on Tuesday, Obi decried the state of democracy in Nigeria, noting that governance at various levels often neglects the welfare of citizens.

“It is unfortunate that 60 years after independence and nearly 30 years of our celebrated unbroken civil rule, our democracy is still marred by undemocratic practices and values,” he said.

Obi furthersaid that “A significant percentage of our elections are deeply flawed manipulated to serve the interests of a select few rather than reflecting the true will of the people.”

Obi criticized the onging rivers crisis, stating that it is not centered on improving key sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation but is instead a battle for political control that does not serve the interests of the people.

“Looking at the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, we see yet another glaring example of how our democracy and governance are not serving its purpose—the welfare of the people of Rivers State,” he added.

He urged the warring parties to reflect on their responsibilities as leaders and consider the suffering of ordinary Nigerians, particularly the people of Rivers State.

“The real losers are the people, their welfare and the future of the society their children will live in,” he stressed, appealing to all involved to reconsider their positions and work towards peace.
