The vice chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Noah Yusuf, has cautioned parents and guardians to avoid buying expensive phones and other gadgets for their children who are students.
He said that such items could expose them to the risk of kidnapping, robbery and other criminal activities.
Yusuf, Al-Hikmah VC gave this advice on Wednesday at the university’s stakeholders congress in Ilorin.
He said that some students flaunt their expensive phones and gadgets, which attract the attention of criminals who may want to steal or extort them.
He suggested that parents should buy less expensive phones that can still serve the purpose of communication and learning for their children.
He said that buying phones worth N1 million or more for students is not advisable, as they can manage with cheaper alternatives.

He also narrated a recent incident where a female student of the university was robbed of her expensive phones twice by her boyfriend, who wanted to make money from them.
He said that after the first robbery, the girl’s parents bought her a more expensive phone, which was also stolen by the same boyfriend.
The Vice Chancellor urged parents to pay regular and surprise visits to their children to monitor their behaviour and the kind of friends they keep.
He said that such visits can help parents notice any changes in their children’s attitudes and correct them accordingly.#Al-Hikmah
