Police Raise Alarm Over Surge in Suicide Cases in Nigeria

The Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, Bright Edafe, has expressed concern over the escalating incidents of suicide among Nigerians, particularly married couples.

Edafe recounted a tragic incident where a man, engaged in a domestic dispute with his wife, resorted to taking his own life by hanging.

The distressing incident sheds light on the grim consequences of escalating tensions within relationships.

In another account, he shared the story of a 16-year-old girl who tragically ended her own life.

The motivation behind her drastic decision was rooted in her father’s threat to discipline her for staying out overnight.

Edafe, emphasizing the gravity of the situation, urged Nigerians to prioritize their mental well-being, stressing that in such cases, the deceased ultimately bears the tragic consequences.

He advised the public to avoid environments that do not contribute positively to their mental health, advocating for a collective effort to create supportive and empathetic communities.

“Suicide has been increasing recently, especially among couples. A man was beating his wife, and while at it, neighbours came to her rescue, only for the man to enter his house and hang himself.

“In another incident, a sixteen-year-old lady who slept outside her father’s house was scared of being beaten by her father. Upon doing all she could to appease the father and mother to no avail, she also hanged herself.

“Let’s look out for our mental health; the person who dies is the one who loses. Anywhere that you do not find peace is not for you. Let’s look out for each other,” Edafe said in a post on his X handle. #Suicide
