In a special session at the Supreme Court marking the opening of the 2023/2024 legal year, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, condemned recent attacks on the judiciary (Judges), labeling them as “blackmail.”

Maikyau expressed concern over the “unfounded” accusations, stating that some lawyers’ remarks were “irresponsible” and could “risk inciting the public.” Calling for urgent judicial reforms, he highlighted the need to review the appointment processes for judges, case management systems, and the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.

Emphasizing the role of the legal profession in shaping public perception, Maikyau urged the judiciary to rebuild confidence through adherence to ethical codes and addressing proven cases of misconduct. He revealed the NBA’s initiative to set up a committee for recommending reforms to the National Assembly.

Addressing financial autonomy demands by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Maikyau warned of the potential economic impact of a strike and stated that the NBA is engaging in talks with stakeholders to address JUSUN’s concerns.

In conclusion, Maikyau called for accountability, urging those accusing judges of bribery to present evidence to law enforcement agencies and demanding an apology if allegations are unfounded.
