The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that it will freeze any account that does not have a Bank Verification Number (BVN) or a National Identification Number (NIN) by April 2024.
The apex bank said this is part of its efforts to enhance the security and integrity of the financial system and to comply with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2007.
According to a circular issued on Friday by the CBN Director of Payments System Management Department Chibuzo Efobi, and the Director of Financial Policy and Regulation Department Haruna Mustapha, the CBN will conduct a BVN or NIN verification exercise for all account holders and wallet users in the country.
The circular stated that the verification exercise will be done electronically and that all BVN or NIN attached to accounts/wallets must be revalidated by January 31, 2024.

Security measures are very crucial in modern communities, that’s the reason why Nigerians embraced BVN, NIN, etc without much questions. However, we’re beginning to question the relevance and sincerity of implementing the national security measures (NIN, BVN). With kidnappers still freely calling and negotiating with the relatives of kidnap victims, without being apprehended by security agencies; and terrorists still operating almost freely in the North, wherein is/are the much touted security benefits of BVN/NIN? There’s even confusion as to NIN document is relevant, the NIN plastic card or the second plastic slip, which GSM network service providers insists it bears the real NIN number.
Why will Senate deprive illiterate and rural Nigerians, who are in majority, of operating their bank accounts bcos they don’t have BVN and NIN? Apparently, the only purpose of subjecting Nigerians to the rigors and heavy costs to FGN, of obtaining BVN/NIN is to aid the banks to apprehend bank scammers. This is absolutely unfair or a scam against Nigerians!
