Federal Court Sentences 4 For Financing Terrorism

The Federal Government has prosecuted four individuals, Modu Aisami, Zana Zarama, Umar Mohammed, and Bunu Kame, on charges related to terrorism. The convictions were obtained through the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who led the Court prosecution.

The defendants faced trial before Justices Binta Nyako and Emeka Nwite, where they entered guilty pleas and requested the court’s mercy. The defence was represented by F. A. Bakre, the Director of Criminal Justice in the Legal Aid Council (LAC).

The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation (DPP), M. B. Abubakar, presented charges against Aisami in Court for financially supporting a terrorist organization by purchasing food products from them, with the knowledge that the proceeds would likely be used for terrorist activities. This act is in violation of Section 13(1)(a)(ii) of the Terrorism Provision Amendment Act, 2013.

Justice Nyako delivered the verdict, convicting Aisami on counts 2 and 3 of the charges, stating, “I find him guilty as charged and he is convicted accordingly.” Aisami received a sentence of 20 years imprisonment for each offense, to be served concurrently.
