In a recent development, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has leveled serious allegations against certain officials within Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s administration.
The PDP claims that these officials have been involved in the misappropriation of public funds. In response, the governor’s office has vehemently denied these allegations, dismissing them as baseless and unfounded.
The controversy arises amidst Governor Akeredolu’s prolonged absence from the state following an overseas medical trip, which has now extended beyond three months. During a press conference in Akure, Fatai Adams, the PDP chair in Ondo, expressed grave concerns over the state’s financial health, stating, “Our state’s finances are being compromised, with hard-earned resources allegedly being siphoned off by various interest groups linked to the government.”
Mr. Adams emphasized the PDP’s commitment to safeguarding the state’s financial interests, highlighting a particular palliative fund reported to be worth N7 billion. He criticized the current administration for its lack of transparency, noting that no financial disclosures have been made to the public during Governor Akeredolu’s tenure. “We demand a comprehensive financial statement detailing the state’s expenditures,” Mr. Adams insisted.

He contrasted this with the PDP’s previous governance, where regular financial updates were provided. The PDP chair called for immediate accountability regarding the administration of the palliative fund, which he claims did not reach the intended beneficiaries.
On the other hand, Bamidele Olateju-Ademola, the state’s information commissioner, refuted the PDP’s claims, labeling them as “laughable.” Speaking to Peoples Gazette, Ms. Olateju-Ademola outlined the stringent checks and balances in place for the approval of state funds. She detailed the limitations on her authority as a commissioner and the procedural requirements for approvals exceeding certain thresholds, which involve the governor and the state council.
Ms. Olateju-Ademola’s statements aim to reassure the public of the integrity of the financial processes within the Akeredolu government. “With such robust checks in place, how can the alleged pilfering occur?” she questioned, casting doubt on the PDP’s accusations.
The situation remains tense as both parties stand firm on their positions, with the PDP demanding transparency and the state government defending its financial governance. The citizens of Ondo await further developments as the debate over the state’s fiscal management continues.
