In a tragic incident, a 500-level geology student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Joseph Agabaidu, was fatally stabbed while trying to retrieve his girlfriend’s handbag from assailants. The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident, which contradicts earlier reports suggesting that Agabaidu was attacked for his mobile phone.

Agabaidu, who hails from the Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State but is based in Benue State, was returning to his lodge around the Yelwan Tudu market in the Yelwa area of Bauchi metropolis when the incident occurred. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

The incident sparked a protest among ATBU students, who expressed their anger at the inadequate security on and around the campus. In response to the protest, the university management shut down the school and directed students to vacate the campus immediately.

The police statement revealed that the deceased was with his girlfriend, Philomena Ahobee, a student of Abubakar Tatari Polytechnic, Bauchi, when unknown assailants snatched her handbag. When Agabaidu tried to retrieve the bag, he was stabbed on the left side of his chest.
