In a unanimous decision, Russia’s Federation Council has paved the way for the nation’s presidential election, scheduled for March 17, 2024.
The announcement, made by the head of the Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, signals the initiation of the election campaign.
Matviyenko expressed the historic nature of the decision, emphasizing, “By choosing a head of state together, we fully share the common responsibility and common destiny of our fatherland.” Notably, this election will witness the participation of residents from parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson regions of Ukraine annexed by Russia.

Despite the anticipation, President Vladimir Putin has yet to officially declare his candidacy for a new six-year term.
“With this decision, we are effectively launching the start of the election campaign,” Matviyenko declared.
