The United States blocked an extraordinary UN bid for a Gaza ceasefire on Friday, as Israeli forces continued their offensive against Hamas following a deadly attack two months ago.
The conflict has resulted in 17,487 deaths in the Palestinian territory, mostly women and children.
Israel, aiming to eradicate Hamas, cited an unprecedented attack on October 7, leaving vast areas of Gaza in ruins.
The UN Secretary-General invoked Article 99 for an immediate ceasefire, urging hostage release.

However, the US vetoed the resolution, dismissing it as “divorced from reality.” Despite warnings from the World Health Organization, the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.
The Security Council’s inaction drew criticism from Doctors Without Borders, while Hamas and Israel reported casualties amid ongoing hostilities.
The death toll also rose in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
