Edo 2024: Obaseki’s Anointed Candidate Resigns As NB Board’s Chair To Pursue Politics

Mr Asue Ighodalo has announced his resignation as the chairman of the Board of Directors of Nigerian Breweries Plc, effective December 31, 2023.

The decision, which was disclosed in a corporate filing on the Nigerian Exchange Limited, comes as Mr Ighodalo sets his sights on the governorship election in Edo come 2024.

The company’s secretary, Uaboi Agbebaku, revealed the news following a board meeting on December 7, 2023.

Mr Ighodalo, who hails from Ewohimi in the Esan South-East Local Government Area, is stepping into the political arena with the support of the incumbent Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

He is expected to be the favored candidate to secure the party’s nomination for the upcoming electoral contest.

However, the political journey will not be without its challenges, as Mr Ighodalo will face competition from the current deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, among other contenders.

In preparation for this transition, Nigerian Breweries has appointed Sijbe Hiemstra, the longest-serving director, as the interim chairman beginning January 1, 2024.

Mr Hiemstra will also oversee the appointment process for a new, permanent chairman during this period of change.

Mr Hiemstra, who has been with the board since August 1, 2011, including his tenure as Heineken’s Regional President for Africa and the Middle East, and his contributions to Nigerian Breweries’ governance and statutory audit committees.
