The Rivers State Government says the House of Assembly Complex was demolished due to structural defects resulting primarily from a recent explosion and fire incident.

The main building has been deemed unfit for human use as a consequence of this event.

According to a statement from the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Joseph Johnson, the governor conducted an inspection of the building on the day of the fire incident.

Subsequently, professionals were invited to assess the structural integrity of the complex.

The need for demolition and rebuilding was established following their evaluation.

It is noteworthy that during the complex attack, explosive dynamites were employed, causing significant damage and shaking the structure to its foundation. Subsequent visible cracks on the walls rendered the entire building fragile and deemed it unsafe for legislative activities.

“After the assessment of the integrity of the complex, the experts warned the government that continuing to use the building in its present state would be disastrous”, he said, noting that the government had tried all cost saving measures towards repair of the complex until it bowed to superior view of rebuilding the complex to a more befitting edifice.

In the interim, the Rivers State Government has made provision for an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct their affairs pending the rebuilding of the complex.
