The National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, is optimistic that a new minimum wage agreement will be achieved with the Federal Government by March 2024.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Thursday, Ajaero disclosed that the government had formally requested the NLC to nominate representatives for the newly established minimum wage committee.

He stated, “The Federal Government, through a letter, has asked the organized labour to provide our names for the new minimum salary committee to be formed.

“The list was submitted to the government since last year, and once the committee is constituted, we will engage in negotiations with the government as a union to finalize the agreement.”

“The current minimum salary is set to expire by March this year, so it is anticipated that we may conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage before March,” Ajaero noted.

Commenting on the pay award issued to Nigerian workers by the Federal Government, Ajaero clarified that only one month’s worth of wages had been disbursed. “All should be released to the workers by the end of this year January.”
