Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has raised the alarm over the reported exit of Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing (JSM), the largest syringe manufacturer in Africa, from Nigeria.
Obi’s sentiments echo a growing trend of multinational companies departing the country, challenging the government’s assertions of successfully attracting investors.
Obi emphasized the far-reaching consequences of such departures. “Aside from resulting job losses, the cost effects on products, worsening poverty index, capital flight, and loss of human assets, I am particularly concerned about the negative impacts on our health sector,” stated Obi.
The recent departure of GlaxoSmithKline and now Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing compounds the strain on Nigeria’s already fragile health sector, sending it further into a state of jeopardy. Obi urged the government to reverse this trend by creating a conducive environment for productivity and business growth, aiming to transform Nigeria from a consumer-oriented to a production-focused nation.
“The New Nigeria we look forward to will focus on moving the nation from consumption to production, and from unproductivity to productivity,” asserted Obi. He emphasized that such a transformation would attract foreign and local investors, generate employment, and foster prosperity.
