Madam Obebhatein Jonathan, the elder sister of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, passed away on January 11, 2024. She was seventy years old and had been briefly ill before her death at the Federal Medical Center in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Known affectionately as Amissi, she was remembered in a statement from Jonathan’s media office as a retired teacher and businesswoman who was a loving mother and grandmother. Her life was marked by her dedication to serving God and humanity.
The statement highlighted her devout Christian faith and virtuous character, describing her as a role model for many people both within and outside her community.

Madam Obebhatein Jonathan leaves behind three children, several siblings, including President Dr. Goodluck Ebele jonathan, and her mother, Mama Eunice Afeni-Jonathan.
The family has planned her burial for February 16, 2024, and will announce further details about the funeral rites in due course.
