In an effort to prevent prostate cancer among men, medical professionals have advised Nigerian men to maintain a balanced diet and engage in regular sexual activity.
This counsel was shared by experts during a recent discussion in Lagos, as reported by Vanguard.
Dr. Caleb Yakubu, the Coordinator of One-Stop-Breast Cancer Clinic at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and a Consultant Radiologist, emphasized the importance of regular sexual activity in lowering the chances of developing prostate cancer.
Yakubu cited scientific evidence indicating that men who ejaculate more frequently are less likely to develop prostate cancer. He explained that frequent ejaculation prevents stagnancy or reduction in the flow of prostate fluid, which, when mixed with sperm, forms semen.
“The prostate gland plays an important role in ejaculation. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland that produces the fluid in semen. And it helps push this fluid out during ejaculation,” said Yakubu.
He further elaborated that studies, including one in the US, suggest a significant reduction in the risk of prostate cancer if a man ejaculates up to 20 times per month. Despite these findings, Yakubu stressed the importance of early detection, advising men aged 40 and above to undergo Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) tests regularly to monitor their prostate health.
