Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are set to resume their strike on Monday, January 15, 2024, as announced by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) FCT Wing.
The strike, initially initiated in September 2023, was aimed at securing the implementation of a 40% Peculiar Allowance and the settlement of 25 months of outstanding minimum wage arrears.
Despite a temporary suspension in October, following the establishment of a six-person committee by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to investigate the issues, teachers express frustration with the slow progress.
The NUT FCT Wing, in a communique after an emergency meeting, conveyed disappointment with the lack of tangible results from the committee’s efforts.

The communique stated, “Despite meetings and reports,” the communique stated, “primary school teachers remain in a desperate situation, struggling with the rising cost of living while their rightful entitlements are withheld.”
In response to the perceived lack of resolution, the teachers have set a deadline for January 19th. If their grievances are not addressed by then, secondary school teachers across the FCT are slated to join the strike on January 22nd.
