Thousands of residents flooded the streets of Kano to welcome Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf back home, following the Supreme Court’s decisive verdict reinstating his election victory.
The celebration, marked by a sea of red and white – the colors of Yusuf’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) – reflects the widespread relief across the state after the court affirmed the governor’s triumph in the March 18th gubernatorial poll.
Previously, the election had faced annulment from both the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, declaring Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful governor.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the Supreme Court in Abuja overturned both judgments last Friday.
Governor Yusuf, alongside his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, members of the state Executive Council, and NNPP leaders, returned to Kano by road, caught in the midst of the celebratory atmosphere.
Hundreds of thousands of supporters and NNPP members gathered at Chiromawa village along Zaria Road, the entry from Abuja. Many others lined the streets leading to Filin Mahaha, the venue of the grand victory rally, eagerly anticipating Governor Yusuf’s address to the exuberant crowd.
