Prof. Godwin Emezue, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, was abducted by gunmen on Saturday evening, the police confirmed.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. at a petrol station in Umuekwu Amachara, Umuahia South LGA, where Emezue and his wife had gone to buy fuel.
Chinaka said in a statement issued in Umuahia on Saturday night that the kidnappers seized the wife’s ATM card and forced Emezue into a Lexus SUV before driving away with him.
She said the police command was “deploying resources and assets including intelligence and technical aid towards unraveling the crime, and safely rescuing the victim from his captors”.

She also appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by providing any useful information that could assist in the rescue of the victim and the enhancement of security in the state.
She urged Abia residents to “remain calm and continue their legitimate activities while maintaining vigilance and security consciousness”.
