The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has advocated for a significant reduction in the cost of governance, particularly at the federal level, stating that we need to prioritise critical areas such as education, health and pulling people out of poverty.
Obi shared this perspective on Monday in Ibadan during an interactive session with journalists after offering condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde at the government house in response to the Bodija explosion on January 16.
Emphasizing the need for post-election focus on governance, Obi urged the federal government to take decisive measures to alleviate poverty in the country, stating, “Elections are over, and governance is the key thing.”
“It’s a matter of sacrifice; elections are over, governance is the key thing, and what is required, for me in particular, is that we need to cut the cost of governance, especially at the federal level.
“It is unacceptable the way it is going. We need to prioritize critical areas such as education, health, and pulling people out of poverty,” Obi remarked.
Obi further called on the federal government to prioritize essential sectors of the economy, including education and health, given the current global reality.
The former governor of Anambra also urged Nigerians to actively contribute to the nation’s development, emphasizing that everyone should play a role in turning around the country’s fortunes.
During his visit, Obi expressed condolences to Governor Makinde and the people of Oyo State over the unfortunate incident of the Bodija explosion. He commended the state government for its prompt response to the explosion.
In response, Governor Makinde thanked Peter Obi for the visit and mentioned that an investigation was still ongoing to uncover the masterminds behind the explosion.
