The Abuja chapter of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCN) has sounded the alarm over the skyrocketing prices of baking materials, prompting an inevitable increase in the cost of bread. Secretary Richard Adeyemi, in a statement on Friday, highlighted the industry’s precarious position, citing a relentless surge in production expenses.
“We are not ignorant of the N1,400 to a dollar exchange rate and the drastic inflation in flour and sugar prices,” Adeyemi, the secretary of the Abuja chapter, expressed concern. “The same bag of flour has jumped from N37,000 to N42,000, while sugar has soared to N72,000 per bag.”
Adeyemi, the secretary of the Abuja chapter, underscored the challenge faced by bakers in adjusting prices proportionately to the rising costs, particularly affecting the middle and lower classes, who rely heavily on bread as a staple food. “The middle and lower class consume more than the upper class, making it difficult for bakers to increase prices,” he lamented.

Chairman Ishaq Abdulraheem echoed Adeyemi’s sentiments, stressing the urgency of government intervention to avert the collapse of the industry. “Members struggle daily to manage their businesses amidst relentless price hikes,” Abdulraheem emphasized.
The association appealed for public understanding as they contemplate a necessary hike in bread prices, not for profit, but to ensure business sustainability. “The decision is not for profit but to sustain the business,” Abdulraheem clarified, while urging the public to support bakers during this challenging period.
