A cohort of Youths from the northern region ignited the Nigerian flag in protest against the escalating cost of living and enduring economic difficulties characterizing the initial year of Bola Tinubu’s tenure.
Recently circulated footage on X showcased the youths setting the flag on fire, lamenting the precarious economic situation.
They highlighted the sharp contrast between the crisis and the significant government expenditure on nonessential matters amidst the economic downturn.
“We voted you (referring to Bola Tinubu) into power. But see the situation we are in: people are feeding on leaves while you are living in an affluent manner,” the youths said.
They added, “A packet of spaghetti is now N700 and beyond the reach of the poor.”
The youths also expressed the view that Nigeria’s 1-2 defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday served as a crucial redirection of citizens’ attention towards the ongoing, unspoken hardships.
“We thank the almighty God for Nigeria losing the football competition. We pray Nigeria does not win anything if this is how the country is being governed,” said the northern youths.

However, Mr Tinubu persists in encouraging Nigerians to persevere. He acknowledges that his bold economic reforms may initially lead to hardship for the majority of Nigerians, yet he underscores their necessity for the subsequent economic prosperity that will ensue.
“The time may be rough and tough. However, our spirit must remain unbowed because tough times never last. We are made for this period—never to flinch, never to falter.
“The socio-economic challenges of today should energize and rekindle our love and faith in the promise of Nigeria,” Tinubu said.
